Dhoni Banned for Two Matches, Who is Responsible?

Mahinder Singh Dhoni is banned for two matches after 2nd ODI in Nagpur. He was found guilty for slow overrate during the last 8 overs of the match. Undoubtedly, the match was evenly poised at that moment and it takes good amount time for field setting, discussions and strategizing to grab the match. Is the captain sole culprit?

Group B, Bangladesh v India - Cricket World Cup 2007

Ahsish Nehra and Zaheer Khan shared most number of overs. Both the pacers took more time to finish their overs than the captain would have actually imagined. The entire team wanted to win and there were several parallel discussions among Indian players were going on. An yes… Dhoni too was busy with the experimenting with the field settings and talking to the bowlers.

Now, was banning for two one dayers or one five day test match only option left with the jury. Or ICC could have fined a full match fee to the captain. This is a decision which is always debatable, but I can’t really comment on it. People even say that ICC has been partial towards such a nature of offense towards Aussie and English players. Whereas, brown and black skinned teams have faced severe penalties than white ones.

Obviously, the team balance will be hampered in absence of the captain who was in a good form with his bat too. Let’s hope the team comes united and win the series. This would be the perfect homage to their captain, who took team India to the no. 1 spot in test matches!
